With Canadian Thanksgiving just around the corner, it feels like the perfect time to reflect on gratitude. And I have a story to share that really brings this to life.
For the past two and half years, I’ve had the most incredible virtual assistant (VA), Sarah. She’s been my right hand, helping me to keep my online business running smoothly, and honestly, I can’t imagine it without her. Sadly, Sarah is moving on—likely returning to her original career as a nurse. As she prepares to step back into that role, we’ve been working hard to find someone to take her place.
We thought we’d found the perfect fit. After an in-depth search, we offered the position to a great candidate, and she accepted. We were set to meet on Zoom – Sarah and I – ready to welcome this new VA onboard. But then she didn’t show.
Naturally, I followed up, thinking maybe there was a mix-up with time zones (so easy to happen!) or that she’d simply fallen asleep—she’d mentioned working late into the night. The next morning, I found an email from her, explaining that due to personal circumstances, she was withdrawing from the position. It must have been a tough decision for her, especially since she’d been so excited to join us. And talk about disappointment from our side!!
So, here we are.
Sarah is leaving at the end of November, and the clock is ticking. She’s focusing on her studies preparing for exams, while I’m preparing for my teaching trip to Tuscany in late October, followed by a couple more weeks of travel. We really wanted a new VA up to speed before I left. *
I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t a bit bummed.
But why am I telling you this?
Because even though this setback stings, it’s also reminded me of how incredibly lucky I’ve been to have Sarah’s support. I’ve never taken her for granted (at least, I hope not!). Her presence allows me to focus on what I do best—creating art, developing tutorials for my IGNITE! membership, and mentoring those in my Accelerant Programme. She’s always there when I need her, with a cheery attitude and unfailing grace.
So, this is a love letter to Sarah—a heartfelt thank you for all she’s done over these nearly three years. (I’ll also add Tynan to this note, without whom the tech would be a disaster!)
And it’s a reminder for you, too: take a moment of gratitude, to appreciate the people in your life who make things easier, better, and brighter. Don’t wait for a crisis to remind you how much they mean to you.
I could list all the people who make my life beautiful, but I’d be here all day. Wait, no—let’s not take the easy way out. Let me at least do some thanking! My parents, my incredible siblings and their families, my cousins. I’m deeply grateful for my wonderful family, who love and support me in many different ways. And my friends—what would I do without them?
Then there are my students, who inspire me daily. As I watch them grow as artists, my heart swells with pride and joy at what they achieve.
And my gratitude extends to the wider community—to the people who work tirelessly to protect the environment, resolve conflicts, and generally make the world a better place. Not a perfect place perhaps, but one where we can all live, find joy, and support one another.
And finally dear reader, I’m grateful for you taking time out of your day to be here with me.
As to my new VA search? I’m trusting the universe on this one. It works in mysterious ways, and I truly believe that when things seem bleak, there’s always a silver lining—something to be learned or a new door opening just around the corner. So I’m staying grateful, even through the uncertainty.
